JURY FEATURE A+D Museum is excited to announce our REALTIME & INTERACTIVE / ON THE SCREEN jury member Carrie Chen! Carrie Chen (she/her) is an artist based in Los Angeles. She works with CG animation, game engine simulation and installation to explore how digital figuration can be a poetic and multidimensional means to express ideas about hybridity, representation, time and memory. Carrie’s practice draws on non-Western ontologies while engaging with the complexities of intercultural identity, social behavior, digital bodies, culture and technology. Carrie has exhibited and held talks internationally. She is a recipient of the 2024 STRP Award for Creative Technology and has been recognized as the 2024 Emerging Curator at Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions (LACE). Her expanded practice involves curation, lectures, art direction, and design commissions. She teaches Advanced Visual Communication at USC’s Media Arts + Practice, and 3D Arts at Parsons Design and Technology. Her work seen here is Primavera 春, a digital simulation in which the artist depicts herself at multiple life stages, all coexisting within a blossoming spring landscape. Using artificial intelligence, Chen generated “aged” versions of herself and synthesized them with archival family images, 3D avatars, and motion capture technology to create digital selves that exist in alternate timelines and imagined histories. These avatars interact dynamically in a sprawling floral meadow, partaking in activities such as dancing, running, swimming, observing, and embracing—allegories of childhood, pleasure, beauty, and renewal.By engaging with and recontextualizing visual pastiche found in Renaissance and Romantic period art, this work challenges and reorients established Western male-dominated, art-historical narratives. A body that has not been allowed to appear now owns the viewer’s gaze.As a meditation on time and existence, Primavera 春 invites viewers to engage with the notion of life as a cyclical journey with multiple, coexisting narratives permeated with ancestral echoes, both rooted in the past and extending into the future.

While humans interpret context based on hierarchy, characteristics, and emotional responses, machines may offer a unique perspective. While questioning the following; Can machines capture the essence of human culture through their sensors?-MACHINE CONTEXTUALISM aims to bridge human and machine senses, reassembling and transforming contextual information through image analysis.Situated in downtown Los Angeles, the project utilizes empty parking lots to collect diverse contextual data. Unlike human-centric prioritization, machines interpret context without hierarchical biases, offering a novel lens on urban environments.Link to Project Video for Full View: https://lnkd.in/gXeM-3raBe on the lookout for our next Feature!
