After the popularity of theCrochet Heart Ear warmerI released earlier, and after many of you asked for a matching hat pattern – I have been working on getting this crochet heart hat pattern released before Valentine’s Day!

I love this hat so very much! This crochet heart color work hat is so cozy, warm and comfy. If you enjoyed the crochet heart ear warmer you are going to love this hat!

I made a couple of my hats in team colors for the Big Game this weekend since my kids and grandkids are big fans of our KC team. I have a feeling I will be making many of these hats before the weekend is over!

Crochet Heart Hat Pattern Details

I kept the basic design of thecrochet heart ear warmerto keep things uncomplicated. These crochet hats are worked from the bottom up in the same way as the ear warmers. Once the heart color work sections are completed you will begin working decrease rounds to the top of the hat making a fitted beanie style hat.

Once the main body of the hat is complete you will add the bottom edge and ribbing. The ribbing is made with chains and sc worked into the back loops only along the bottom edge. If you need a little visual help check out my Remember Me Beanie which has a photo tutorial for the ribbing section.

I have a video tutorial I put together for the crochet heart ear warmers. It will help you work the heart sections of the hat including how to read a graph, color changes and carrying colors to minimize ends. Check out the FPdc color work tutorial on YouTube.

I have several graphs and written pattern instructions included in the free pattern below – toddler size, child size and adult size hats. I am also including the graph for adding stripes for the adult size hat. The stripes add a sporty team spirit vibe the hat – perfect for game day! Variations can be easily made to the provided sizes by simply changing up the hook size/yarn weights you choose to use for your heart hat.

For my crochet heart hat pattern I am usingRed Heart Super Saver* which is a medium worsted weight acrylic yarn. Very economical and with plentiful color options! You can certainly substitute your favorite worsted weight yarn – Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn!, Red Heart With Love, Paintbox Simply Aran, Vanna’s Choice, Big Twist Value, Caron Simply Soft, Caron One Pound and so many more! Raid your yarn stash – even mix and match.

These hats look great with or without the addition of pom poms! I love the toddler version with a handmade yarn pom pom. If you want a slouchier style hat I recommend adding rounds of FPdc after the color work section before you begin decreasing.

Pattern written in US crochet terminology

Supplies:

Red Heart Super Saver, Weight 4 Medium (100% acrylic)

  • Color Hot Red 2.8 oz /150 yards (MC)
  • Color Saffron 0.6 oz / 30 yards (CC)

Crochet hook size I (5.5 mm)
Pom Pom (optional)
Scissors
Tapestry Needle

Approximate finished size:

  • Toddler: Approximately 16” circumference x 7” height
  • Child: Approximately 17” circumference x 8” height
  • Adult: Approximately 21” circumference x 9” height

Gauge:13 FPdc sts x 10 rows = 4” x 4”

Abbreviations:

  • MC = main color
  • CC = contrasting color
  • RS = right side
  • ch(s) = chain(s)
  • dc = double crochet
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • yo = yarn over
  • FPdc = front post double crochet (see special stitches section below)
  • sc = single crochet
  • BLO = back loop only
  • FPdc2tog = front post 2 double crochet stitches together(see special stitches section below)
  • Rnd(s) = round(s)

Special Stitches:

FPdc (front post double crochet stitch):Yo and insert your hook from front to back to front around the dc stitch post from the row below, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through remaining 2 loops.

FPdc2tog: Yo, insert hook from front to back to front around the dc stitch post from the row below, yo, pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull through two loops (two loops on hook), yo, insert hook from front to back to front around the next dc stitch post from the row below, yo, pull up a loop (four loops on hook), yo, pull through two loops (three loops on hook), yo, pull through remaining three loops on hook.

Pattern Notes:

  • Four different graphs are provided – toddler size, child size, adult size without stripes and adult size with stripes. Variations of size can be achieved by simply changing up hook size.
  • Written instructions for adult size hat are written without color changes for stripes. Follow the graph for color changes if adding stripes.
  • Hat is worked from bottom up, adding ribbing to bottom edge of hat at the end.
  • Graph is worked as FPdc around the stitch in the round directly below, with the exception of the first round which is a round of double crochet.
  • Each pixel of the graph corresponds to 1 FPdc (rounds 2 – 10) or dc (round 1) stitch.
  • Main body of the hat is worked in the round without turning. Slip stitch join at the end of each round into the top of the first FPdc, not the beginning ch-2.
  • Graph rounds represent rounds that are NOT decreasing rounds. Refer to written round instructions for decreasing stitch details.
  • To work color changes, work last dc stitch before new color until there are two loops on the hook, pull in new color with last yo.
  • To reduce ends to weave in, I carried the non-working yarn as yarn “floats” on the wrong side of the hat.
  • Ch-2 at beginning of each round does not count as a stitch.
