Insights, advice, suggestions, feedback and comments from experts

As an expert in DIY crafts, I can confidently say that I have extensive knowledge and experience in creating unique and adorable projects. When it comes to Valentine's Day, there's nothing more delightful than creating a personalized card box for your little girl to store all the cards she receives from her friends and classmates. And what better theme than unicorns, which are loved by many children, including my own daughter!

To make this unicorn Valentine card box, you will need a few supplies that are easily accessible. Firstly, you'll need a small cardboard box, preferably one that can be upcycled. You'll also require an 8x10" piece of cardboard, white wrapping paper, pastel curling ribbon, two gold (or any unicorn appropriate colored) gift bags, pink felt or construction paper, faux flowers, packing tape and/or scotch tape, a glue gun and/or school glue/glue stick, wire cutters, scissors, a black marker, and two small paperclips. Additionally, you can find a free unicorn horn and ears template online.

To begin, you'll need to prepare the cardboard box. Tape the bottom of the box closed and turn it upside down. Fold the two smaller flaps on the left and right sides into the box and tape them to the inner walls. Cut about 5/8" off from each of the remaining flaps and tape them in place, creating a card slot. Then, wrap the box in white wrapping paper, just like you would wrap a present. Use scissors to cut out the opening of the box that the wrapping paper has covered.

Now it's time to decorate the unicorn Valentine box. Using wire cutters, remove the heads of the faux flowers from the stems. Glue the flowers to the front of the box, in front of the card slot. I recommend using a glue gun for this step, as regular glue tends to have difficulty holding the flowers in place.

Next, cut out the unicorn horn and ears from the template sheets. Open one of the gift bags and trace and cut the horn, setting it aside. Repeat the process with the second gift bag, tracing and cutting the large unicorn ears. For the small unicorn ears, trace and cut them onto pink felt or construction paper.

Trace and cut the large unicorn ears onto the 8x10" piece of cardboard, but extend an extra 1" at the bottom. This extra tab will allow you to glue the ears onto the box securely. Attach the large unicorn ears from the gift bag to the cardboard ears using a glue gun or regular glue. Then, attach the small unicorn ears to the large unicorn ears.

Roll the unicorn horn closed until it slightly overlaps the edges, and secure it closed using a glue gun or regular glue. To prevent it from unrolling while the glue dries, use a paperclip at the top and bottom. Attach the large unicorn ears to the back of the box using a glue gun or regular glue, and place the unicorn horn on top of the box, just behind the card slot.

Now it's time to create the unicorn's mane. Cut several 8-10" pieces of the curling ribbon and use the edge of scissors to curl them. Once you have a nice handful of the unicorn "mane," gather it at the top and use one of the paperclips you used for the unicorn horn to hold them together. Attach the unicorn "mane" just behind the flowers, so you have one bunch on the left and one on the right.

To add the finishing touches, use a black marker to draw a cute face on the box. If you have extra felt, you can also make some adorable cheeks.

Your daughter will surely enjoy making this unicorn Valentine card box and proudly showing it to her classmates at school. After Valentine's Day, she can keep the box in her room as a delightful decoration that she can enjoy all year long. It's a wonderful way to make her Valentine's Day extra magical!

I hope you and your daughter have a fantastic Valentine's Day, filled with love and creativity. If you have a son, you might also want to check out the rocket ship Valentine card box, which can be made using materials from the dollar store, making it a cost-effective crafting option.
