Small potato biryani recipe, Baby potato biryani - Raks Kitchen (1)

I first tried small potato biryani from a cookbook and loved it. But the method was so tedious. So I adapted the recipe, made it shortcut method and it turned out equally good.

This is very spicy and different kind of biryani and the small potato attracts everyone in this dish. Kids gonna love it!

I have made this very often and it is my to go recipe whenever I have relatives at home. Usually biryani recipes have ginger garlic paste in main, but this one have no garlic, yet turns out so flavourful.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Basmati rice
  • 15 Small potato Use more if potatoes are too small
  • 1 Onion Sliced lengthwise
  • 1 Tomato Small
  • teaspoon Turmeric
  • ½ teaspoon Garam masala
  • 1 & ½ cup Water
  • ¼ cup Curd You can use as less as just 2 tbsp
  • ¼ cup Coriander leaves measured tightly packed
  • Salt

To roast & grind

  • 1 teaspoon Oil
  • 1 tablespoon Coriander seeds
  • 3 Red chilli Medium spice
  • 3 Green chilli Medium spice
  • ¾ tablespoon Ginger
  • 2 tablespoon Grated coconut

To Temper

  • 3 tablespoon Oil
  • 1 Biryani leaf
  • 1 Cinnamon small piece
  • 1 Cardamom
  • 1 Cloves

Instructions

Prep rice

  • Wash and soak rice for minimum 10 minutes. You can soak it for longer time.

  • Optional step to roast the rice for a minute or until dry in a teaspoon of oil. This ensures separate grains after getting cooked.

Cooking potato

  • Take a small pressure cooker and wash the small potatoes well.

  • Fill it with water until all are immersed fully.

  • Add generous rock salt. Pressure cook for 2 whistles.

Masala

  • Fry coriander seeds and redchillies in a teaspoon of oil until fragrant.

  • Add ginger, green chilli and give it a saute.

  • In goes 2 tablespoon grated coconut and roast until dry, starts wafting coconut aroma.

  • Place the above roasted items, coriander leaves, curd in a blender.

  • Grind smoothly.

Roast potato

  • Heat a pan with a tablespoon of oil and add the boiled, peeled small potatoes.

  • Roast in medium flame until golden brown. Turn over occasionally for even roasting.

Prepare biryani

  • Heat a small pressure cooker with oil and temper with cardamom, cinnamon, clove and biryani leaf.

  • Add sliced onion and fry for a minute.

  • After that, add finely chopped tomatoes and fry till soft with a pinch of salt.

  • Then add the ground paste, turmeric, garam masala and give it a stir.

  • After that, add the roasted potatoes and little salt.

  • Cook in low or medium flame for 4 minutes or until oil separates from the masala and the raw smell goes off. I cook covered.

  • After that, add roasted rice, 1 & ½ cup of water, required salt and mix well.

  • Check for salt and pressure cook for 2 whistles in medium flame or 14-15 minutes in lowest flame. (refer note 1)

  • Take care to prevent burnt bottom by stirring once in between if after 10 minutes. At the same time, don't break the rice while mixing. Do it very gently only few turns.

  • Level and again continue for 4-5 minutes. Switch off stove

  • Give 5 minutes standing time before serving.

Notes

  • My stove can be kept in a really low low flame, so I cook in low flame. My cooker is indolium does not get burnt at the bottom, best for such one pot rice items. Use the same for best results.
  • Since there's coconut, curd in the masala, it tends to take longer to cook as well as chances for burnt bottom. So take care to prevent this.
  • Add oil or ghee as needed as this rice will be very dry if there is no oil/ghee.
