Can you get drunk from Midori? ›

The melon liqueur can be enjoyed on its own, but it's best known for its role in co*cktails. “[Midori] pairs wonderfully with fresh ingredients like mint, basil, apple, and melon, which can help to enhance the melon flavor while tempering its slightly bitter notes,” says Stevens.

Midori is 20% alcohol, which isn't too strong for an alcoholic spirit. However, it's not recommended to drink this liqueur straight, purely because it's so sweet!

When you get Midori home, store it like any other liqueur. A cool place out of direct sunlight will extend its shelf-life, and there's no need to refrigerate it. Pop the bottle into the freezer for a quick chill if you like, but it's low-proof and has a freezing point around 22 degrees Fahrenheit.

Midori is made from Japanese musk and Yubari melons, and is of course artificially colored green. The bottle's texture resembles the surface of a melon, and in 2012 the recipe was changed based on bartender's feedback to cut back on the sugar content by 20%.

The movie was banned all over the world, including Japan for its extreme use of physical, psychological and sexual abuse against children and small animals. Harada also put his life savings into this project since no studio was willing to invest into it. The film is based off a manga by Suehiro Maruo.

But we have some good news: Since Japanese spirit giant Suntory retooled its formula in 2012, removing some of the sugar and infusing it with more natural flavors, Midori has had a revival among bartenders as both a co*cktail base and modifier.

Midori's recipe was altered in 2012 to reduce artificial flavorings. Midori may have never disappeared fully from the market, but due to its intense color and saccharine profile, it fell out of favor among consumers when more “serious” co*cktail programs developed in the late '80s and '90s.

Is Midori the same as green Chartreuse? ›

Midori features the refreshingly different, incomparably light flavour of honeydew. Midori may well be the most versatile mixer ever created suiting both fruit and cream based liqueurs. Midori has an alcohol content of 21%.

Liqueurs can be served neat or straight, or 'on the rocks' with ice. You can even sip on liqueur with a mixer - like a Midori and lemon - but nowadays you are most likely to drink liqueurs in co*cktails where they are added to up the ante of some of your favourite co*cktails - thanks to their myriad flavours.
