What does the GREY dot mean on the Weather Channel radar? ›

Precipitation moving away from the radar has positive velocity (yellows and oranges). Precipitation moving perpendicular to the radar beam (in a circle around the radar) will have a radial velocity of zero, and will be colored grey. The velocity is given in knots (10 knots = 11.5 mph).

As the beam travels away from the radar source, it gets higher above the ground due to the curvature of the Earth. Therefore, if the precipitation is restricted to very low levels, especially within a few hundred feet from the ground, the radar beam might overshoot it, leading to undetected rainfall.

A few words will be enough: 'it's a fine sunny day here' or 'it's freezing cold and foggy'; whatever is appropriate.

The radar's computers will calculate the shift and determine whether the precipitation is moving toward or away from the radar, and how fast, then apply a corresponding color to those directions and speeds. Red is typically a target moving away from the radar, while green is applied to targets moving toward the radar.
