If you love crochet, you'll probably already have everything you need to complete this fun stitch project. It's wrapped round a wooden hanger, and will look perfect on a hook on the wall or the back of your bedroom or living room door.

It's the perfect project to increase your craft storage – you'll be able to pop your yarn, scissors and fat quarters for sewing in the pockets. This project is suitable for beginner crocheters, who have learned the basics of how to crochet and would like to use their skills to create fun accessories for their home.

We've crocheted our organiser in pink, teal and yellow yarn, but you can make yours in whatever colours best suit your style.

What you need

Tension

19 sts and 15 rows to 10cm square over herringbone half treble crochet using a 3.25mm hook.

19 sts and 17 rows to 10cm square over pocket pattern using a 3.25mm hook.

Abbreviations

Ch chain; cm centimetre; dc double crochet; mm millimetre; rep repeat; RS right side; sl st slip stitch; st(s) stitch(es); tr treble crochet; WS wrong side; yo yarn over; * repeat the instructions following the single asterisk as directed; [ ] repeat instructions within the brackets as directed.

Special abbreviations

H-htr - herringbone half treble, yo, place hook in next st, yo, pull hook through first st and first loop on hook (2 loops left on hook), yo, pull through rem loops.

Note: The main piece is worked from the top down.

Using 3.25mm crochet hook and A, ch78.

Foundation row: working into 3rd ch from hook, h-htr into each ch to end, turn. 77 sts

Row 1: Ch2 (counts as first h-htr) miss first st, h-htr in each st to end, turn.

This row sets herringbone crochet and is repeated.

Work 9 rows.

Place a marker at either side of last row to mark the fold that will be attached to the coat hanger.

Work 11 rows.

Place a marker at either side of last row to mark end of second pocket.

Work 20 rows.

Place a marker at either side of last row to mark start of second pocket.

Work 13 rows.

Place a marker at either side of last row to mark end of first pocket.

Work 20 rows.

Place a marker at either side of last row to mark start of first pocket.

Work 9 rows, changing to yarn B on the last yo of final row. Fasten off A.

Next row (RS): Using B, ch2, (counts as h-htr), miss first st, h-htr blo in each st to end of row, turn.

Next row: Ch1 (counts as dc), miss first st, dc in each st to end, changing to C on last yo, turn. Fasten off B.

Next row (RS): Sl st in first st, *[sl st, ch2, 3tr, ch2, sl st] into next st, sl st into next st; rep from * to end of row, fasten off.

Pockets (Make 2 the same)

Note: Pockets are worked from the bottom up.

Using 3.25mm crochet hook and C, ch78.

Foundation row: working into 3rd ch from hook, h-htr into each ch to end, changing to A on last yo, turn. Fasten off C. 77 sts

Row 1 (RS): Using A, ch2 (counts as first h-htr) miss first st, h-htr in each st to end, turn.

Row 2: ch1 (counts as dc) miss first st, dc in each st to end, changing to B on last yo, turn. Fasten off A.

Row 3: Using B, ch1 (counts as dc) miss first st, *1dc in 1 row below, 1dc; rep from * to end, turn.

Row 4: Ch2 (counts as first h-htr) miss first st, h-htr in each st to end, changing to C on last yo, turn. Fasten off B.

Row 5 and 6: Using C, Rep rows 1 and 2.

Row 7 and 8: Using A, Rep rows 3 and 4.

Row 9 and 10: Using B, Rep rows 1 and 2.

Row 11 and 12: Using C, Rep rows 3 and 4.

Rows 13 - 22: Rep rows 1 - 10 once more, changing to C on the last yo of final row, turn.

Row 23 (RS): Using C, Sl st in first st, *[sl st, ch2, 3tr, ch2, sl st] into next st, sl st into next st; rep from * to end of row, fasten off.

Making up

Weave in ends.

Optionally starch each piece for extra structure.

Sew both pockets to Front of main piece between markers along both side edges and bottom edge taking care to keep the lower edge of pocket straight. Now work a running stitch up the pocket to make pocket sections wherever you desire to fit what you want to put in them. Securely fasten the top of the pocket sections for strength.

Fold top edge of main piece over base of coat hanger to WS. place folded edge to first markers and sew along this edge to attach the organiser to the coat hanger.
