Seahorse Pattern

The article provides a step-by-step pattern for crocheting a seahorse. Here is a summary of the pattern:

  1. With Orchid yarn, create a magic ring and make 10 single crochet (SC) stitches in the ring.
  2. In the second round, make 2 SC in each stitch around (20 SC).
  3. In the third round, make 2 SC in the first stitch, followed by SC in the next 3 stitches. Repeat this pattern around (25 SC).
  4. In the fourth round, make SC in the first 5 stitches, chain 6, double crochet (DC) in the 4th chain from the hook, half double crochet (HDC) in the next chain, single crochet (SC) in the last chain, and slip stitch to join back to the 5th stitch. Make SC in the remaining 20 stitches.
  5. In the fifth round, chain 30, SC in the 2nd chain from the hook and in the next 15 chains, HDC in the next 2 chains, DC in the next 2 chains, treble crochet (TC) in the next 3 chains, DC in the next 2 chains, HDC in the next 2 chains, SC in the remaining chain. Slip stitch to join back to the head. Slip stitch in the first 4 stitches and around the nose. Continue to slip stitch in the next 4 stitches after the nose. Make SC in the remaining stitches in the round.
  6. Continue stitching around the body, making SC in the first stitch, HDC in the next 10 stitches, SC in the next 4 stitches, 2 SC in the next 10 stitches, SC in the remaining stitches until you reach the tip of the tail. Make slip stitch decreases 5 times, SC in the next 7 stitches, HDC in the next 2 stitches, 2 DC in the next 4 stitches, HDC in the next 3 stitches, SC in the remaining stitches, and slip stitch to join to the neck. Fasten off.
  7. To create spikes, join Dark Orchid yarn 5 stitches up from the nose on the head. Chain 4, SC in the 3rd chain from the hook and in the last chain, slip stitch to join to the same stitch. Make SC in the next two stitches. Repeat this pattern to create 9 spikes. You can space the last two spikes out around the neck area by making 3 SC between each spike. Fasten off.
  8. To create the tummy, join Dark Orchid yarn on the first HDC on the lower tummy. Make SC in 4 stitches, HDC in the next 6 stitches, and SC in the remaining stitches until you reach the neck. Fasten off.
  9. To create the fin, use Dark Orchid yarn to create a magic ring. Chain 1 and make a SC, 2 DC, SC, slip stitch, SC, 2 DC, and 2 SC. Join to the first SC and fasten off, leaving a long tail.
  10. To create the eye, use black yarn to create a magic ring. Chain 1 and make 6 SC in the ring. Join to the first SC and fasten off. Use a strand of white yarn or thread to stitch on the eye and a little "twinkle" above the eye.
  11. If you want the blanket to be reversible, make two seahorse appliqués and stitch them onto the front and backside of the squares. When stitching the appliqués, work your tapestry needle carefully between the double crochet stitches of the water bubble square to keep the squares looking clean.
